Sunday, October 6, 2024 Saudi Arabian startup Riyadh Air is swiftly advancing in its journey toward becoming a key player in the global aviation industry. The airline is expected to secure its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) by the end of 2024, marking a significant milestone as it prepares to begin commercial operations in early 2025. Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas, speaking at the Routes World 2024 conference in Bahrain, provided insights into the airline’s current progress and future plans, setting the stage for what promises to be a bold new entrant in the aviation sector.
“We’re into route-proving flights at the moment,” Douglas shared with the Routes World audience. “We’re days away from completing that process. We’ll have an AOC by the end of the year.
” This statement confirms Riyadh Air’s rapid progress, bringing the airline closer to launching operations and announcing its initial routes, which are expected to be revealed in early 2025. Riyadh Air has placed an order for 39 Boeing 787-9 aircraft, with an additional 33 options, making it clear that the airline has ambitious plans for long-haul routes. The Boeing 787-9, renowned for its fuel efficiency and long-range capabilities, will serve as Riyadh Air’s launch aircraft.
Douglas emphasized that these aircraft will not only fly long-haul routes but will also be used to connect regional destinations through Riyadh, maximizing aircraft utilization. Slot timings will be a critical factor for airports hop.
