Denis Naku Rivers State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Roseline Uranta, and a non-governmental organisation, Accord for Development, have said women deserve more economic opportunities and decision-making roles to contribute to the growth of society. Uranta spoke during a workshop on Affirmative Action and Economic Advocacy for Women and Youths held in Port Harcourt. She expressed dismay over some practices that prevent women from being where they want to be, noting that while women should not completely equate themselves with men, they deserve better.
The commissioner said the theme of the workshop, ‘Advancing Gender Equity Through Affirmative Action and Social Inclusion for Women,’ resonates deeply with the state government’s vision to foster a gender-sensitive environment. She added that the administration of Governor Siminalayi Fubara has policies and programmes aimed at improving the lots of women in the state. She stated, “As the honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs, I am passionate about creating an inclusive society where women have equal opportunities to thrive.
