There’s long been an overlap between fans of heavy metal and the works of J.R.R.

Tolkien, with Lord of the Rings providing direct inspiration for Black Sabbath, Rush, Led Zeppelin, and many other bands. Prime Video’s series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is leaning into this connection wholeheartedly, with a new video revealing an excellently ear-splitting track from the upcoming season two . Check out composer Bear McCreary excitedly talking about “The Ballad of Damrod,” an “anthem” for the Hill-Troll (can’t get more metal than that) featuring legendary drummer Gene Hoglan—who incorporated late, great Rush drummer Neil Peart’s cymbals into his kit as part of the recording process.

“The Ballad of Damrod” also features the vocal stylings of Meshuggah’s Jens Kidman, who hails from Sweden but clearly has a touch of Middle-earth in his blood. You can listen to the entire song on Spotify ; crank up that volume just like a Hill-Troll would want you to. The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season two hits Prime Video August 29.
