My long-time partner and I have had a beautiful handmade wood and iron bar cart in our home for the last 10 years. It’s heavy and difficult to move, yet it’s been lugged from one home (and city) with us to another. After having our first child almost three years ago, we decided it was time to say goodbye to our beloved bar cart.
We grew tired of our toddler testing the durability of our expensive glassware and her mountain of toys took over the base of the bar cart, becoming an eyesore. If we were to replace the bar cart, it would have to be for something special and there were certain must-have requirements. We have limited space, so we need something narrow.
We wanted something open to make the space feel bigger and showcase a few knick knacks, while having the ability to hide our daughter’s toys yet have them remain accessible to tiny people. Cost was also a consideration — we didn’t want to spend over $500. We searched high and low and finally settled on the Bixby 33′′ Bookshelf by Modway , which is currently on sale for $450.

Simple, timeless and stylish while managing to hide my daughter’s toys in a way that excites her — having to open her very own “secret door” to find her things seems to bring new joy to the same old toys she’s played with countless times.

The shipping was free and the bookshelf arrived with all necessary parts in one large box. Assembly: This took about 75 minutes for one person. I usually assemble these pieces myself so I have a complete understanding of the physicality required, but my partner took this one on as we wanted to get it up quickly.
The assembly was straightforward — the included instructions were clear and all of the holes aligned perfectly (a pet peeve of mine if they don’t). Favourite features: The appearance — it’s a neutral, modern, Scandinavian look, and appears much more expensive than it is. It’s multifunctional — a beautiful display of your precious items, with the ability to store (or hide) toys, cleaning supplies or home essentials.
It’s sturdy and well-constructed and the cabinet drawers have a soft close design, meaning no banging doors. If you have kiddos, I suggest purchasing a simple anti-tip strap (also available on Amazon ) for extra peace of mind. Least favourite features: Nothing to note after about two months of testing, however, the assembly could always be easier — meaning no assembly.
