Perhaps Bodmin wouldn't be at the top of the list of Cornish towns to go out of your way to visit. Yes, there are plenty of reasons to go there including arguably Cornwall's best attraction Jail and the arts events which community group Into Bodmin promote in two of the town's most impressive buildings, The Old Library and St Petroc's Church. However, forgetting about the neighbouring Camel Trail, Lanhydrock and the moor, there is very little to attract you to the centre of Bodmin itself.
Like so many rural towns, it's lost its way a bit and the high street is looking very tired. It's a great shame as there's so much potential and community there, if somewhat set adrift from the more thriving Cornish coastline. There is definitely one place on the edge of the town centre that you definitely should visit if you haven't already.
A restaurant which should be shouted about from the very top of Brown Willy / Bronn Wennili; a restaurant deserving of the sort of kudos and Instagram influencer froth as those perennial big names which always make the Sunday supplement must-dine lists. The Flory is a beauty. Just look at the outside of it first - a touch of class which sits well in Mount Folly Square, opposite the grand Shire Hall and the town museum.
Inside it's a haven of cosy dining rooms over three floors with an almost Georgian feel - historic without being old-fashioned. There's a more laid-back feel downstairs, with the main evening restaurant on the first floor and private dini.
