Derry is increasingly positioning itself as a centre of culinary excellence One of the dishes served at Brook Hall Estate The past makes the future work for cities. Paris and its Notre Dame, the boulevards and the ancient walks along the Seine is a good example as are Seville, Rome, Florence and countless other city destinations. This is what attracts millions of tourists each year.

And from that comes the modern experience of hotels, restaurants, Air BnBs, and tour guides helping shape a new future for them. Recent uprisings by locals may indicate that some places have reached saturation point, though. In Ireland few cities are as rich in heritage and legacy as Derry.



A trip last week to the Culmore Road revealed just how historic the place is and how forward thinking they are up there. Brook Hall, an elegant estate on the western banks of the Foyle, is a commanding presence, its white Georgian façade facing sternly across its domain of very old oaks and beeches and the mighty river beyond..
