While the communal seating gets the thumbs down at this cafe by day/wine bar by night, our critic finds little to fault in the food September in Blackrock, Co Dublin. Photo: Gerry Mooney Without wanting to come over all sentimental, it makes me happy to see a new generation of young people entering the hospitality business, optimistic in the face of all the doom and gloom around the sector. Passion is an overused word, but I sense that for William Browne and Jamie McNamara, who have been friends for many years, there was no real alternative to ploughing their combined energy and effort into a bricks-and-mortar restaurant.

It also pleases me that September is a cafe by day and a wine bar with small plates at night, rather than a restaurant per se, and that it’s possible either to drop in spontaneously for a glass of wine and a snack or to plan ahead, book a table and turn it into dinner.
