Art: What Lies Beneath La Casa Dipinta/The Painted House, by Brian O'Doherty What’s in a name? Not enough in some cases. Polymath Brian O’Doherty was so unsettled by the political situation in Ireland in 1972 that he changed his name to Patrick Ireland. O’Doherty’s gesture was in protest against the Bloody Sunday killings on January 30, 1972, when 13 unarmed civilians were shot dead by the British Army in Derry.

Born in Ballaghaderreen in 1928, O’Doherty’s impressive CV spells Renaissance man. In 2018, he said, “I always found multiplicity available to everybody and greatly unused by everybody. I deeply believe people are capable of much more than the role they assign to themselves.

There is much more that people can do.” Join the Irish Independent WhatsApp channel Stay up to date with all the latest news.
