REFUGIO — Memories of the 2011 season were hard to ignore when Refugio beat Freer 95-0 in District 16-2A, Division I play on Friday night at Jack Sportsman Bobcat Stadium. Refugio head coach Drew Cox was an assistant on the 2011 team that won the Class 2A, Division I state championship, but not without considerable criticism. The Bobcats set what was a state scoring record of 891 points in 2011 that was broken by Aledo.
The 2011 team scored 93 points against Freer, scored 80 points once, 70 points three times, 60 points three times, and 50 points twice in a district that was similar in makeup. “We’ve lived through this before. We know the deal,” Cox said.
“My goal is not to embarrass kids. At the same time, I’m not going to cheat my kids who come to practice every day and say we’re just going to put you in and take a knee. That’s not right.
” Cox points out the Bobcats and Buckaroos played with a running clock from the 8-minute mark of the second quarter, the third time this season Refugio has played with a running clock in the first half. The Bobcats ran 23 offensive plays against Freer and threw a total of seven passes. “The difference this week is our defense scored twice,” Cox said.
“There were two other times they intercepted a pass and recovered a fumble and were inside the 10.” In addition, Refugio’s final touchdown was scored by a reserve who had never played running back. “I absolutely wasn’t trying to see how many points we could score.
