Realme has had a stronghold in the Indian market for some time now. According to a recent report by market research firm Counterpoint Research, Realme has been among the top 5 brands in terms of shipments from Q4 2022 – Q1 2024. Whether it’s the entry-level C-series, or the budget-friendly P-series, youth-centric Narzo series or the performance-oriented GT series – the brand has an offering covering every price-point.

Known for delivering flagship-level performance at competitive prices, Realme's GT series has positioned itself among the formidable contenders in India's affordable premium smartphone segment. With a focus on powerful processors, high refresh rate displays and advanced camera systems, Realme GT devices have carved a niche for tech-savvy consumers seeking a balance of performance and affordability. Realme recently launched the Realme GT 6T and Realme GT 6 , positioning as a direct competitor to established players like the Poco F6 5G and Motorola Edge 50 Ultra 5G.

The GT 6 offers a compelling blend of performance, design and camera. The phone is IP65-rated for dust and water resistance. The Realme GT 6 comes in three storage variants: 8GB + 256GB which is priced at Rs 40,999; the 12GB + 256GB version priced at Rs 42,999 and the top-end 16GB + 512GB version priced at Rs 44,999.

We used the smartphone and this is what we think about the Realme’s most powerful smartphone. Design-wise, the Realme GT 6 offers a premium aesthetic with a sleek and ergonomic form factor. It looks pretty much like the Realme GT 6T which made its India debut weeks ahead of the more powerful version.

It has a dual-texture design for the rear panel. While the upper half boasts a shiny and metallic finish, the lower section features a more subdued, glossy finish texture. The frame is made of plastic and offers a matte finish that matches the overall colour theme of the smartphones.

The smartphone’s matte plastic frame is not visually inoffensive but it doesn't complement the curved display's high-end aesthetic. The side-mounted buttons are accessible but feel somewhat soft and lack tactile feedback. The phone has a taller stance, which means that it offers an enhanced grip and the curved display adds to the visual appeal.

The phone gets an IR blaster, a convenient feature for controlling home electronics, and the bottom edge houses the USB-C port, speaker grille, and dual SIM tray. The build quality is impressive, with a combination of glass and metal materials contributing to a sturdy and luxurious feel. However, the plastic construction of the phone’s spine detracts from the overall premium feel.

Coming to the display, the Realme GT 6 sports a 6.78-inch panel with a high refresh rate, offering vibrant colours, deep blacks and excellent clarity. Realme claims that the smartphone’s display sets a new benchmark in smartphone displays with a peak brightness of 6000 nits, surpassing industry standards.

However, the company said that this figure was achieved in lab testing and we weren’t able to achieve such high brightness in our daily use. Do you need such a high-brightness display especially when you can’t use it? No. Do you mind if it's there? No, we don’t mind having it on our phones.

What we can tell you is that the display’s brightness ensures excellent visibility even in direct sunlight and enhances HDR content experience. Moreover, the display has earned SGS certifications for sunlight readability, esports performance, eye protection and flicker-free technology. The Realme GT 6 incorporates an 8T LTPO display with a dynamic refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 120Hz, which essentially optimises power consumption and visual smoothness.

Other features of the phone’s display include advanced eye protection, including AI-powered adjustments based on user behaviour. Realme has equipped the GT 6 with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for enhanced durability. In conclusion, whether you're consuming multimedia content or engaging in gaming sessions, Realme GT 6’s display delivers an impressive experience.

At the heart of the Realme GT 6 lies the powerful Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 processor that ensures smooth multitasking, rapid app launches and great gaming experiences. While the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 SoC is placed a few notches below the flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset, it is capable of delivering flagship-level performance. Coupled with generous RAM and storage options, the GT 6 delivers fluid performance even under demanding workloads.

The same with gaming where the phone provided optimal performance by easily handling demanding titles like PUBG, League of Legends and Genshin Impact with minimal stutter. The Realme GT 6 has a cooling system, designed to dissipate heat efficiently and further enhance sustained performance. To maintain peak performance, the GT 6 incorporates an Iceberg Vapor Cooling System that features a 10,014mm2 3D tempered dual vapour chamber.

The phone is not perfect, it does get slightly warm but that didn’t worry us because that's normal behaviour especially in the scorching heat wave that we are experiencing. Apart from the fine gaming experience, we did not feel any problem while using the phone in our day-to-day tasks. The phone took everything we threw at it with ease.

When it comes to software, the Realme GT 6 runs Realme UI 5 based on Android 14. We have been reviewing Realme phones for some time now and this model is among the top three with its software experience. The writer prefers clean software but Realme UI 5 on GT 6 is appreciated, not only for smooth animations and behaviour but also less spam notification from pre-installed apps like “App Market” or “Theme Store”.

The Realme GT 6 offers a refined software experience compared to previous generations. The interface is smooth, responsive, and clutter-free. Having said that, we also had ample options to personalise the phone according to our preferences.

We think that those looking for a good camera with high-performance internals will appreciate the Realme GT 6. The phone’s camera system features a high-resolution primary sensor capable of capturing excellent images in right lighting conditions. Of course, there are ultrawide and telephoto lenses which essentially expand the device's photographic versatility.

The Realme GT 6 sports a triple rear camera setup that includes a 50MP Sony LYT-808 sensor, a 50MP telephoto camera with support for 2x optical zoom, and an 8MP ultrawide-angle sensor – all enclosed in an iPhone 15 Pro-like camera design. There are two large camera cutouts with another smaller one that has LED flash. The Realme GT 6's primary camera captures detailed images with nearly accurate colours and handles dynamic range effectively.

Low-light photography is also a strength of the device but a little tinkering with post-processing can enhance the output. We specifically noticed the “ProXDR” button in the phone’s gallery app while viewing a photo. Tapping it shows the difference between what the actual photo looked like when the phone’s camera clicked it and what it is made into after it is processed by camera algorithms.

For example, the white ceiling lights that looked dull were brighter after processing and there was a slight colour boost to actually make up for the loss in colours. The ultrawide and telephoto cameras also performed well in right lighting conditions. While there is a slight colour shift, the photos are acceptable.

The colour appeared a bit on the darker side when clicked photos from both ultrawide and telephoto lenses. There’s a mild shutter lag that won't be problematic for mass users. The Realme GT 6's telephoto lens excels in portrait photography, delivering a hit-or-miss edge detection in challenging lighting conditions.

Image processing can sometimes over smooth facial details and image quality deteriorates beyond 4x. Low-light performance is a weakness for the ultrawide lens. Overall, the GT 6's camera system is competent.

Add that capability to the software, the phone offers a bunch of features and modes to enhance image quality and creativity. The AI features like smart removal and AI Smart Loop to quickly access frequently used apps also add to the overall experience of the smartphone. On the front, there is a 32MP selfie shooter that clicks acceptable images.

It supports features like showing palm to click group photos and even exposure setting. We found the camera to be decent when it comes to clicking images with dynamic range. There is a slight colour shift between the output of different cameras.

Also, we found the low-light performance of the camera to be a bit inconsistant. Battery life is another area where the phone excels. The Realme GT 6 packs a 5,500mAh battery that supports 120W fast charging.

This combination of large battery and high-speed charging is something that is essentially solving problems for a bunch of people. This combination ensures users can comfortably power through a full day on a single charge. When extra juice is needed, a quick 10-15 minute top-up provided us sufficient battery life for extended use.

Realme GT 6 is a compelling package that challenges the status quo in the mid-range to affordable premium segment. It offers top-notch performance, a stunning display, a capable camera system and a stylish design. While it may not surpass every aspect (such as lower price point or inconsistant low light camera performance) of its more established competitors, the Realme GT 6 presents a strong value proposition for consumers seeking a high-end smartphone without breaking the bank.
