Incoming hair trend for fall? Meet the razored bob, a style which has recently seen a 1,500 per cent increase in Pinterest searches, and gives all the lived-in texture that we need as the cooler months set in. Any kind of bob works well in fall when roll-necks and scarves come out to play, but the “razored style” also delivers the kind of natural, undone effect that can be washed and left to dry and still looks good. Taking to the red carpet to celebrate season four of Emily in Paris this week, Lily Collins showed off her own razored bob – and it was pretty perfect.

Parted down the middle and tucked behind one ear, the cut sat a couple of inches above her shoulders and featured razored ends and a mussed-up finish. The hairstylist behind the look, Gregory Russell, created a sleek parting which graduated down into more texture at the bottom. “Razored bob: the shaved or straight bob George Northwood, London’s king of bobs, is also a fan of Collins’s look.

But what exactly is a razored bob? “Unlike bobs cut with scissors, this is cut with a razor, which gives a slightly jagged, textured edge,” he explains. “It almost looks a bit torn at the bottom, so is less harsh than a normal bob, which gives it a more modern feel.” One-length bobs that have been cut with scissors can look a bit prim, so this technique lends a slightly undone, cool finish to the hair, whether it’s been styled or not.

In Northwood’s view, cuts like these should be worn as naturally as possible: “Kind of straight, but a natural kind of straight,” he adds. Another good example of the cut worn well is French influencer Lena Simonne’s lived-in razored bob. Instructions Styling? Naturally, we all want to do as little as possible, and luckily this cut lends itself to that.

Heed Northwood’s advice and keep it as low maintenance as possible, using texturising sprays and dry shampoo to add grit and a slight piecey-ness to ends. Northwood’s Wave Holding Spray will do the job nicely, or try Umberto Giannini’s Texture Boost Mist. Spritz through the ends and scrunch in to add definition.
