Rajkot: The Devbhumi Dwarka district continued to face the onslaught of rain, with the temple town Dwarka receiving 158mm of rainfall on Tuesday till 6 pm. Significant rain was also reported in the Kutch district since Monday night. The heavy downpour led to waterlogging in many areas, disrupting normal life.
Since Monday evening, three rain-related deaths have been reported from Kutch and Junagadh districts. With several villages still marooned, the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) was busy rescuing people in Devbhumi Dwarka. An NDRF team rescued 15 people from Ghadechi village after receiving a call from the disaster management control room stating that they were trapped in a farm area on the outskirts of the village.
The team used boats to rescue six men, five women, and four children. Jodiya taluka in Jamnagar district recorded 134 mm of rainfall on Tuesday. However, on Monday night, there was damage to the Sogthi check dam in Jamjodhpur taluka of Jamnagar.
The district administration has made arrangements to safely release water from the dam and has begun repair work. According to sources, a 38-year-old man died after being struck by lightning in a village in Lakhpat, Kutch, on Tuesday. Two people died of drowning in rainwater on Monday.
These included a cattle breeder from Mendarda in his late 50s who drowned in floodwaters while crossing a natural drain, and a 58-year-old man who drowned in Maliya Hatina when he was returning from the grocery shop, said Junagadh district officials. On Tuesday, substantial rainfall was recorded in Abdasa, Mandvi, Nakhatrana, and Mundra talukas of Kutch. According to data, Mandvi received 141 mm of rainfall, Nakhatrana 127 mm, and Rapar taluka 108 mm.
The main market of Nakhatrana town was waterlogged, paralyzing normal life. Several internal roads, including Bhuj-Lakhpat, Nakhatrana-Lakhpat near Mathal, and Nakhatrana-Naliya near Jaodar, had become inaccessible due to the heavy rain. A viral video showed around 20 buffaloes drowning in turbulent water in Mundra taluka.
In Abdasa, several heavy vehicles were swept away in a swelling river stream near Dumra village. A tractor got swept away, and an earthmover was used to rescue it. In Mandvi town, a luxury car was swept away in floodwaters.
