Pune: The India Meteorological Department ( IMD ) has forecast showers in the city till weekend as the rainfall activity dropped substantially on Thursday, with Shivajinagar receiving just 4.1mm rainfall till 5.30pm.
Data showed that Shivajinagar received 133mm of rainfall in the 24-hour period ending 8.30am on Thursday, its highest single-day Sept rainfall in IMD's recorded history. Amid the sharp showers, the irrigation department had increased the discharge from the Khadakwasla dam to 15,000 cusecs on Wednesday, which was brought down to 4,700 cusecs after a drop in the rainfall activity.
Amid the high-intensity rainfall on Wednesday, PMPML officials confirmed of recording highest number of single-day breakdowns, with 107 vehicles developing technical snags throughout the day. "Generally, the number of daily breakdowns stand at anything between 80 and 90. On Wednesday, however, the number increased to 107 owing to the rainfall," PMPML PRO Satish Gate said.
PMPML runs 1,400 to 1,500 buses every day. "Of the buses suffering breakdowns on Wednesday, 92 belonged to the private contractors while 15 to the PMPML. Most of the e-buses suffered breakdowns," Gate said.
Camp resident Kailas Doke was left in a spot when the bus he was travelling by broke down near Golibar Maidan on Wednesday evening. "The driver said there were some technical problem. We were seated in the bus for an hour," he said.
According to PMPML, 14,392 buses suffered breakdown during Jan-Aug period this year. P.
