Prayagraj: The Sangam city received a much-needed reprieve from the sultry weather on Sunday morning with light and moderate rainfall. The rain started at about 4 am on Sunday and continued till the morning, leading to waterlogging in many streets and localities including George Town, Tagore Town, Mumfordganj, Allahpur, Rajapur, Attarsuiya, Dariyabad, Kareli, Ghausnagar, Chowk, Bahadurgunj, Mohtashimgunj, Jhunsi, and other adjoining areas. However, soon after the skies became clear and weather once again became sultry.

Few trees were uprooted on some streets. Commuters’ faced problems due to bad condition of roads during the rains. Some vehicles got stuck on the waterlogged roads, and several two-wheeler riders fell while traversing the damaged roads.



However, weather experts claimed that there would be more spells of rain and thundershowers in the next two to three days. “Waterlogging in most spots in the city was caused by the collection of silt in drains and nullah and since there was no proper cleaning of drains ahead of monsoon,” asserted the residents. In Jhunsi area, rainwater entered some houses.

However, the rains failed to deter the spirits of shoppers who arrived at prime markets to purchase rakhis and other decorative items a day ahead of Raksha Bandhan. The rakhi sellers have made adequate waterproof makeshift arrangements to carry out their business throughout the day. Moreover, the devotees of Lord Shiva, popularly known as kanwariyas, also started their journey to offer jalabhishek to Lord Shiva at Kashi Vishwanath temple on the occasion of the fifth and last Somvar of the Shrawan month.
