Quentin Tarantino recently revealed that he refuses to watch Toy Story 4 because he believes Toy Story 3 is one of the best movies he's ever seen and a perfect conclusion to the series. During an interview on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, the acclaimed director expressed his admiration for the Toy Story trilogy and explained why he has no interest in watching the fourth installment. Tarantino shared that while he doesn’t usually watch a lot of animated movies, he is a big fan of the original Toy Story trilogy.

He praised the series for its exceptional storytelling and called Toy Story 3 a magnificent film that perfectly wrapped up the story. According to Tarantino, the trilogy could have been one of the greatest in film history if it had ended with the third movie. He went on to compare the Toy Story trilogy to other famous film trilogies.

Tarantino mentioned that he believes only a few trilogies have successfully delivered a satisfying conclusion, highlighting Sergio Leone's Dollars trilogy (A Fistful of Dollars, For a Few Dollars More, and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) as an example. He explained that in many trilogies, the first movie is great, the second one expands on the story in a significant way, but the third one often fails to live up to the expectations. However, he argued that Toy Story 3 not only met but exceeded the high standards set by the first two films.

Tarantino recalled how he felt when Toy Story 3 was released, describing it as a devastating yet beautiful conclusion to the story of Woody, Buzz, and the gang. Because of this, he has no desire to watch Toy Story 4, even though it was well-received by critics and audiences alike. For Tarantino, the story had already ended perfectly with the third film, and he didn’t want to see anything that might change that.

Despite his refusal to watch the fourth installment, Toy Story 4 was a major success, earning over $1 billion at the worldwide box office and winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. Now, with Toy Story 5 in development under the direction of Andrew Stanton, who also worked on Finding Nemo and Wall-E, the franchise continues to grow. However, for Tarantino, the story of Toy Story ended with the third movie, and that’s where he prefers to leave it.
