Pro-Palestine protesters have said they will cancel a planned protest after Myer scrapped an event to mark the opening of its Christmas windows. The festive display in Melbourne’s Bourke Street Mall is a major tourism drawcard for the CBD and the unveiling was set to happen on Sunday, but was cancelled when activist group Disrupt Wars promoted a “Crash the Christmas Windows” demonstration. “Christmas is cancelled, and there will be no joy or frivolity while children in Gaza are massacred,” a post online read.

Victoria Police called the protest plans “nothing short of disgraceful,” and said there would be a strong police presence at the windows on Sunday. Premier Jacinta Allan also condemned the protest plans, telling ABC Radio Melbourne: “We can’t let these sorts of ugly protests ruin these beautiful Christmas traditions”.
After the backlash, protest organiser Amy Settal told The Age the action would no longer be going ahead. “The children coming to see the Myer Christmas windows were never a target, because children are not a target,” she told the outlet. “In light of Myer’s decision to cancel their window reveal event, planned disruptions will not go ahead.
” It is not clear at this stage if Myer will now go ahead with the unveiling event. Victoria Police have said the group that had planned to disrupt the windows.
