When asked to describe the home, Brigitte Richter said, “With a house like this, it is hard to determine where to start.” Half of the Richter & Peck Team at William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty , she and Sonia Peck are the agents handling the sale. After giving it some thought, she started by mentioning the curb appeal of the home at at 5 Atwater Terrace in Farmington.

“The brick exterior really elevates this house. The brick facade gives it a special look, very stately and very elegant.” Enhancing this impression is the circular driveway, allowing guests to drive right up to a front entry and showcasing a portico supported by two stately columns.

It accesses the formal living and dining rooms, and is open to the central hall that leads to the family room, a large eat-in kitchen, a private study or home office, and a half bath. “It is a well laid out floor plan that is open and intelligently planned, giving you access to everything from the center of the house,” Richter said.

Also noteworthy during a tour of the home is the care and attention to detail evident in the millwork. “The custom millwork is beautiful,” Peck remarked enthusiastically. “You have wainscoting in the foyer going up the main staircase, triple crown molding in most of the rooms on the first floor, and the millwork surrounding the fireplaces — there are five in the house — extends all the way to the ceiling.

One of my favorite details is the rounded arched doorway on the first floor.” Richter continued to highlight the finer details. “The family room has large floor to ceiling windows surrounding the gas fireplace and a stunning mahogany built-in entertainment center, while the office is even more impressive with its elaborate coffered ceiling.

There isn’t a room in the house that doesn’t boast exceptional millwork, which I absolutely love. It gives it an elevated look,” she said. “But it’s not overdone.

It’s very pretty,” Peck added. Reflecting contemporary lifestyles, the eat-in kitchen will undoubtedly become the center of activity either when entertaining or for daily living. “The kitchen is spacious,” said Peck.

“It is perfect for entertaining, perfect for creating amazing meals. The Viking oven range is impressive and modern. It has wall ovens and warming drawers.

It is a true chef’s kitchen equipped with top-of-the-line appliances.” Other features include a big center island, a Sub-Zero refrigerator, and a connection to the dining room that goes through a butler’s pantry with its dry bar with a wine chiller. “It’s a really well thought out house with all the amenities for people who like to enjoy life,” Richter said.

Views from the kitchen’s many windows take in the impressive fully fenced backyard with its manicured lawn, plantings, in-ground pool, and hot tub. In the eating area, windows that go to the ceiling let in lots of natural light as well as views of the mature trees that enhance privacy. The second floor has four of the home’s five bedrooms with two bedroom suites on either end of the house.

One is a large primary bedroom with a sitting room, a luxury bathroom, and two walk-in closets. On the other side of the house is another large bedroom suite close to the home’s second staircase, which goes to the mudroom that connects the kitchen to the garage. This bedroom has its own bathroom and two walk-in closets.

“This is a great feature of the house,” Peck said. “Guests can enjoy their own private space. It is also ideal for an au pair or in-laws.

” The other two bedrooms on the second floor also have ensuite bathrooms and ample closet space. The fully finished top floor has the fifth bedroom and a large open space that is currently used as an office, though it could serve other functions, Richter said. A full bath completes this level.

“The lower level is also finished,” Peck said. “It has a beautiful, custom-built temperature-controlled wine cellar. For wine lovers, this room is a dream come true.

” In addition, the lower level has a workout room and a spectacular home theater. Peck shared, “This is my favorite feature. It has a beautiful coffered ceiling and state-of-the-art surround sound system.

When you watch a movie, it really feels like you are in a professional movie theater.” The unfinished space in the lower level offers plenty of storage with another stairway leading directly to the four-car garage, Richter noted. Richter also pointed out that the previous and current owners have made significant updates.

The current owners replaced the roof in 2021. The previous owner replaced windows and the heating and cooling system, converting it from oil to propane. “This is not something that you generally find in Devonwood, but it makes gas cooking, gas fireplaces, and gas heating for the pool possible,” Richter said.

Another upgrade is the landscape lighting that illuminates the home beautifully at night, Peck added. The house has simultaneously managed to be both stately and inviting. It is sophisticated and elegant, yet it makes people feel eminently comfortable and welcome.
