Grace Edema Medical practitioners under the aegis of Association of Nigerian Private Medical Practitioners, Lagos State chapter, have raised concerns about the burden of multiple taxes and the proliferation of regulatory agencies that are negatively affecting their operations. This complaint was voiced during the 2024 Gala and Awards held on Saturday in Lagos. The Chairman of the ANPMP, Lagos State branch,Dr.
Jonathan Esegine, said private sector doctors were overwhelmed by excessive demands, such as multiple document submissions for licence renewals and various levies imposed by local governments. These burdens, according to Esegine, hinder efficiency and discourage many doctors from remaining in the profession. “Doctors are excessively burdened with unnecessary demands.
To renew our licences, we must present multiple documents, including tax certificates and letters from local governments. “On top of that, local governments impose various levies. These multiple taxes and payments stifle efficiency and make it increasingly difficult for us to focus on our work.
“The Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency should ease these requirements to support our practice rather than frustrate the efforts of those of us who have chosen to stay in the system. The current situation discourages doctors from remaining in the profession, and this must be addressed urgently,” Esegine stated.
