HYRUM — It was sweet redemption for Madison Verhoef, who punctuated a special regular season for the Mustangs in style. The speedy sophomore tracked down a world class through ball from Megan Nielsen in the 69th minute and finished in clinical fashion to propel Mountain Crest to a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Ridgeline in a Region 11 girls soccer match on Tuesday evening. It was Senior Night for the Mustangs, who went undefeated in region action and will take an impressive 13-game winning streak into the 4A State Championships.
“I’m super proud of the girls to come out tonight and be undefeated (in region),” MC head coach Justin Beus said. “Ridgeline, they played tough, man. They are such a good team, so yeah, it feels good.
It’s super hard in this region to win every game and I’m really proud of them for accomplishing that.” Verhoef was oh so close to giving the Mustangs (15-1, 12-0 region) the lead earlier in the second half as she latched onto a Nielsen through ball, used a checky touch to get around a defender and smashed an offering off the near post. No.
28, who has come on strong her sophomore season, was not about to let a second golden opportunity fall by the wayside. “I was really happy that I could score for my team and I feel like since I missed that one, it fueled me to keep going,” Verhoef said. “And so when I made it, it was just like a big sigh of relief that it went in that time.
” It was an ideal final tune-up heading into the playoffs.
