Sunday, September 8, 2024 The Port of Oakland has released a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to find a developer for its 50-acre Howard Property. Situated along the Oakland waterfront, this former marine terminal has been inactive for cargo vessel operations since 2013. The Howard Property is bordered by industrial activities to the west and Jack London Square, a prime waterfront entertainment hub in the East Bay, to the east.

The Port is open to diverse proposals, including maritime, light industrial, commercial, recreational, or water-related developments. “The Port has a major opportunity to create a transformational development project that can provide critical economic benefits to Oakland and the region,” said Port of Oakland Chief Real Estate Officer Jonathan Veach. “We’re looking for development partners who will help realize the Port’s commitment to creating good-paying, local jobs for the region while fully activating the Howard Property.

In 2019, the Port entered into an Exclusive Negotiation Term Sheet with the Oakland A’s for a potential mixed-use ballpark project, but this agreement expired in May 2023. Presently, the Howard Property is being utilized for short-term rental agreements, supporting container parking, depot operations, and other ancillary maritime services.
