Thiruvananthapuram: While travel from the city airport may have improved in recent years, passengers, especially those who are new, struggle to reach the international and domestic terminals due to poor signage on the main road. The Palayam-Airport Road connects the two terminals, which are situated some distance apart. However, outside the international terminal, on the main road, there is no signiage except for a small green board that says Terminal One and Terminal Two, with arrows pointing to the direction but it cannot be easily spotted by motorists because it is covered under vegetation.
Motorists have to drive past the international terminal entrance and continue along the Palayam-airport road that runs parallel to the runway to reach the domestic terminal via Shanghummugham beach. However, there is no signage on the 4-5km road showing that it will lead to the domestic terminal. The situation is particularly confusing at night because the road is not well-lit.
A blue signboard at the turning after the international terminal directs traffic to Veli, Vettukad, Shanghumugham, and All Saints, but it fails to mention the domestic terminal. The signage is important because it affects those heading towards Kochu Veli Railway Station also. J K Kumar, who recently visited the city, had a difficult time reaching the domestic terminal.
“My friend and I got lost after passing the international terminal and ended up at an entry gate to the airside. We had to get directions from CISF personnel to reach the domestic terminal,” he noted, adding that all major cities have good signage directing motorists to the airport. The Adani Group, which manages the airport, has requested the local administration to install proper signage.
However, despite taking over the airport three years ago, there has been no progress. An official from the Adani Group stated, “We have made several requests for signage but lack the authority to install it ourselves. We are also exploring options to find sponsors to address this issue.
