Pune: Kothrud residents on Friday complained of receiving polluted drinking water from their taps after the civic body had cut supply on Thursday. Local residents said the water was not only muddy, but emitted a foul odour. People feared that drainage/sewage water may have got mixed with the drinking water.
They demanded that Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) take immediate steps to resolve the issue. Civic officials said they would carry out an inspection in the said areas. Most city areas did not receive water on Thursday, because of the civic administration's closure of supply to assist repair and maintenance works at various water supply units, including the main water distribution plant at Parvati.
Supply of water from Bhama Askhed was also kept closed, officials said. The supply was scheduled to resume after 24 hours at low pressure on Friday morning. The water supply department said PMC had avoided a closure over the last two weeks because of festival days.
On Thursday, repairs of power supply cables at water pumping units were taken up . "Water supply resumed late on Friday morning. I opened the tap, but the water had an extremely foul odour.
It smelled like sewage water. The supply of this polluted water continued for around one hour," resident Chanda Ghorpade told TOI. "It is risky to have polluted water flowing from home taps.
Now our society's water tank is also full of dirty water. It will adversely affect the quality of water that we consume," said Ashok Jadhav, .
