Ian Leavers, who joined Queensland Police in 1989 and became the president of the Queensland Police Union in 2009, will step down from his current role on Sunday. "I am going to be the eyes and ears, I will be out there talking to people," Leavers told 9News.

(9News) The appointment was a captain's pick by Premier Steven Miles , who said communities along the Queensland-NSW border have had issues with two different administrations. Leavers will answer to Miles and work directly with community leaders to help cut through red tape.

The immediate appointment came after a series of 9News investigations on the ground in Goondiwindi , where concerned communities feel they are being held hostage by youth criminals. "Sometimes people feel when they are outside of Brisbane that they don't have a voice, I want to be their voice," Leavers said. Leavers believes he can make a difference to the situation. "You have seen me over the last 15 years, whoever I have had to hold to account, I've done that and I'll continue to do that," Leavers said.
