K-pop star Suga may face criminal charges after being apprehended for driving an electric scooter, which is classified as a motor vehicle, while under the influence. Published: August 11, 2024 11:40 AM IST By Edited by Suga, a famed K-pop star, known for being a part of the BTS band, has found himself in hot water due to a drunk and drive case on an electric scooter. Word on the street implies that the scooter he was using falls under the category of motor vehicles, not personal gadgets.

The Police have been keeping an eye on Suga’s drunk and rove case. The BTS agency had also issued an apology letter for spreading misinformation on the same. However, Suga might have driven the electric scooter under the influence of alcohol.

As the scenario unfolds, the likelihood of the police summoning Suga for an inquiry into suspected drunk driving allegations is high. BTS Star Suga To Be Summoned By Court According to reports from a South Korean news source, authorities from the Yongsan Police Station confirmed that the electric scooter, recently involved in an incident with BTS star Suga, fails to qualify as a Personal Mobility Device (PMD). As standard regulations, PMDs are commonly recognised as vehicles weighing under 30 kg and not surpassing a maximum speed of 25 km/h.

Given Suga’s scooter defies these parameters, he stands at risk of facing charges likened to those implicated for impaired car driving. Regulations dictate that items like e-scooters, bikes, motorized wheelchairs, and rollerblades aren’t classified as Personal Mobility Devices (PMDs). An official statement from Dispatch verifies that Prime Minister Suga was utilizing an electric scooter; however, it was established that such a device doesn’t fall under the PMD category.

Reports suggest that the e-scooter which the “Daechwita” singer was on when his inebriated tumble occurred, is classified as a ‘motorized bicycle’. In such a scenario, the offence carries legal consequences much similar to those for driving a car. An official has clarified that, typically, operating a Personal Mobility (PM) device under the influence would only lead to a civil penalty.

Nevertheless, given the scooter in question doesn’t belong to the PM category, riding it while drunk could potentially lead to criminal charges. On the 11th of August, reports emerged from Korea’s Herald Economy stating that Seoul’s Yongsan Police Station have officially laid out plans to interrogate Suga, with the schedule for his appearance yet to be determined. The authorities deem it critical to delve deeper into the incident specifics, as well as to determine the extent of Suga’s alcohol intake at that particular time.

According to the Road Traffic Act, if a driver is found to have a blood alcohol level above the legal limit of 0.08 percent, they could face imprisonment for a period ranging from one to two years, or a hefty penalty between 5 and 10 million won. The seriousness of the penalty will be determined by the police, who will consider several factors – the degree of damage caused by the drunken driver, the length of their journey, the specific conditions of the incident, and, once investigated, the person’s previous criminal history.
