Pune: PMC on Tuesday resumed action against illegal dumping of debris in the green belt near Karvenagar , a month after removal of debris from riverbed . The civic body has served a notice for Rs 7.5 lakh penalty on a private party for dumping the debris.
"The civic administration has again started a drive after receiving complaints against debris dumping . Heavy penalties will be imposed on private parties for dumping debris at the spot," said Prithviraj B P, additional commissioner of PMC. Earlier, the corporation took action in August for debris dumped in the river.
It had excavated illegal debris dumped on Mutha riverbank. The action was taken after floods on Sinhagad Road. According to civic officials, commercial establishments around the riverbed have allegedly thrown sand and other materials for reclamation of the spots around the banks.
But the drive was stopped after a couple of days. According to locals, the dumping started again in the last two or three days. The PMC officials observed that the vacant plots created by dumping the debris were being used for parking by marriage halls and food joints on DP Road.
"During an inspection it was found that approximately 30 truckloads of debris were dumped in the riverbed on your vacant land. This could create an unhealthy situation in the area and may obstruct the river flow during the monsoon, potentially causing loss of life and property. Additionally, a case may be registered against you under MRTP ACT Section 52, Solid.
