The kind-hearted efforts of a local group will help enhance the lives of people living with dementia. The members of the Thomastown Men’s Shed came together to donate a water feature to St Mary’s Garden at St Columba’s Hospital. “Dementia is a complex condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide, leading to cognitive decline, memory loss and difficulties in daily functioning,” said James Collier of the HSE.

“In the face of such challenges, the importance of connecting with the community and providing a supportive residential environment cannot be overstated in enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with dementia.” Engaging with the community fosters a sense of belonging, purpose and connectedness, which are essential for maintaining cognitive function and emotional health. “A carefully planned and dementia-friendly environment can significantly impact the residents’ quality of life,” added Collier.



“Incorporating a sensory garden into the residential environment can offer numerous benefits for individuals with dementia. Calming “Nature has a calming effect and can help reduce stress and anxiety,” he said. “Access to a garden provides opportunities for physical activity, sensory stimulation, and engagement with the natural world, enhancing the overall well-being of residents.

“The Irish model of care for individuals with dementia emphasises the importance of community connections and a supportive residential environment with access to nature. By prioritising social engagement, meaningful activities, and a dementia- friendly design, we can enhance the quality of life and promote the well-being of dementia residents.” Good connections The men’s shed both locally and nationally has fostered good connections with people living with dementia and Thomastown Men’s Shed are no different.

When St Mary’s Garden were developing their sensory garden they reached out to the Men’s Shed for help and they certainly delivered, donating a beautiful water feature. “The kind donation by the Thomastown Men’s Shed will enhance the life of all the people living with dementia in St Mary’s Garden, St Columba’s Hospital now and for many years to come.”.
