First state tournament appearance. Despite a strong defensive effort in the first half and a brilliant effort from senior goalkeeper Emma Fry, that historic season came to an end on Tuesday night as Downingtown West defeated the Konkrete Kids 3-0 at Northampton High School’s Al Erdossy Stadium in the first round of the PIAA 4A girls soccer tournament. All three goals came on set pieces in the second half with Drew Rightmire, Camryn Bayly and Maia Coyle finding the back of the net for an experienced Whippets team with 18 seniors.
Rightmire’s opening goal was directly from a free kick and was a stunner from about 45 yards out with hardly anyone in the stadium thinking she would even dare go for goal. The launched delivery was heading toward the top left corner, and while Fry got a strong hand to the shot, she directed it straight into the net with as much power as it was coming in with. Senior midfielder Chloe Watson, who specialized in these types of long-range goals throughout the season for the Konkrete Kids, was disappointed to be on the other end of one and detailed the types of challenges that the Whippets presented with their size and strength.
