Monday, September 16, 2024 Plans are underway to expand Phú Quốc International Airport, with the goal of boosting its capacity to around 18 million passengers annually by the year 2050. HÀ NỘI — The Civil Aviation Authority of Việt Nam (CAAV) has put forward a proposal to the Ministry of Transport, suggesting the expansion of Phú Quốc International Airport to handle up to 18 million passengers annually by 2050. This plan envisions the airport serving both civilian and military functions.

Approved by the Prime Minister in 2023, the proposal sets a target for Phú Quốc Airport to accommodate 10 million passengers and manage 25,000 tonnes of cargo per year by 2030. The document further outlines that within the next five years, Phú Quốc International Airport will be upgraded to a 4E-class facility in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) standards, while also being designated as a level 2 military airport. The expanded airport will feature 30 aircraft stands, supporting large aircraft such as the B747, B787, A350, and other similar models.

Looking ahead to 2050, the airport’s capacity is projected to grow to 18 million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo annually, with an increase to 45 aircraft stands, including nine for code E aircraft and 36 for code C models. The Ministry of Transport views this expansion as critical to aligning with the national airport system development plans through 2030, as well as the broader planning of Kiên Giang Province. According to the Department of Tourism in Kiên Giang, Phú Quốc island city attracted over 5.

5 million visitors in 2023, marking a 14% rise from 2022, with these visitors making up approximately 67% of the total arrivals to the province. Tourism revenue for the city reached an impressive VNĐ13.928 trillion (US$567.

45 million), marking a significant surge of 92.5% compared to the previous year. This remarkable growth reflects the city’s increasing appeal as a destination for both domestic and international tourists, bolstered by strategic efforts to enhance its offerings and improve visitor experiences.

The sharp rise in revenue can be attributed to the successful promotion of local attractions, investment in tourism infrastructure, and the return of global travelers after pandemic-related restrictions. The nearly doubled revenue compared to 2022 highlights the city’s ability to adapt and innovate in a competitive tourism market. From cultural festivals to natural wonders, the diverse range of attractions continues to draw millions of visitors, contributing to the economy’s strong rebound.

The impressive growth in tourism not only underscores the city’s role as a key player in the nation’s travel industry but also sets the stage for future development and expansion in the coming years..
