The Philippines is set to make a significant mark on the global tourism stage as it prepares to host the prestigious World Travel Awards (WTA) Ceremony for the first time this year, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said on Thursday, Aug. 29. DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco said the event underscores the country's emerging status as a top Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) destination and enhances its appeal for major international events.

“This not only marks a historical tourism milestone for our country under the Marcos administration but also serves as a testament to the Philippines' growing prominence and readiness to host high-caliber international events,” Frasco said. At this year’s WTA, the Philippines is vying for seven awards, including Asia’s Leading Beach Destination, Asia’s Leading Dive Destination, and Asia’s Leading Island Destination. Intramuros, Boracay, Cebu, and the DOT are also nominated in various categories.

Frasco pointed out that these nominations reflect the collective efforts of the government and tourism stakeholders to promote a sustainable and inclusive tourism environment. “Each of these nominations signifies recognition of the unique and diverse offerings of our beautiful archipelago—from our pristine beaches and world-renowned dive sites to the vibrant culture and food and the innate hospitality and friendliness of the Filipino people," she said. The red carpet ceremony will take place on Tuesday, Sept.

3, at the City of Dreams Manila in Parañaque City. Beyond the WTA, the Philippines has also secured nominations for Wanderlust Travel Magazine’s 23rd Annual Wanderlust Reader Travel Awards, including Most Desirable Country and Most Desirable Region. The country is also competing at the 2024 International Travel Awards and the Asia Best of Best Awards, with nominations for Best in Service—Customer Support, Best Marketing Campaign, and Best Woman Leader (Frasco).

“These nominations inspire those of us in the tourism sector to persist in our mission,” Frasco concluded..
