Pune: Peppa Pig , the wildly popular cartoon about a "cheeky little piggy" and her family and friends, has captured the hearts of the preschool set around the world. Now, Peppa is embarking on a live theatrical adventure that promises to delight the whole family. In an exclusive interview with TOI, Mumbai-based director Meherzad Patel , who has a background in comedy and satire with plays such as Devil wears Bata and Bawa Versus Gujju to his credit, talked about embarking on a joyful new direction focused on delighting children and parents alike with his latest project, "Peppa Pig's Big Adventure".
The theatrical production is touring seven cities in India, including Pune. The show will be staged on September 28-29 at Lokshahir Annabhau Sathe Rang Mandir in Yerwada. Patel said he first discovered the cartoon through his nephew and daughter.
"As hard as I tried to push Tom and Jerry and other cartoons which I grew up watching, she liked Peppa Pig," he said. The more episodes he watched with the kids, the more he came to appreciate the show's wholesome themes. "It comes with an attitude of inclusiveness, of keeping your family happy.
I think my kids love me because of how much Peppa loves her father!" he quipped. One of the biggest challenges Patel faced was transforming the two-dimensional characters from screens into three-dimensional puppets for the stage. "If you don't orient them correctly, you're just going to see large noses.
