Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation ( PCMC ) has collected a record Rs 64 lakh in fines since its drive against mosquito breeding sites started in June, health department data showed. The amount includes Rs 39.6 lakh that was collected just in Aug, during a drive that was launched a day after PCMC detected its first Zika case on Aug 2.

Five cases of Zika infection have been reported from PCMC areas, including three pregnant women. Officials said the Rs 64 lakh in fines was collected from more than 1,259 violators. Notices were served against 3,235 sites, which included residential and commercial establishments and construction sites.



Overall, PCMC officials identified 14,000 mosquito breeding sites. A senior PCMC official said this year, focus has been on construction sites, resulting in the highest fine collection in PCMC health department’s history. Last year, the department had fined 2,528 rule-breakers by December, collecting total fines of Rs 17 lakh.

More than six lakh homes have also been surveyed this year. “Fines against construction sites are 10 times higher than those on residential properties. That increased the overall fine collection” a senior PCMC official said.
