Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation ( PCMC ) has served notices to four contractors following complaints of unclean roads from residents. The civic officials have also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 on one of the contractors. "We had received complaints from citizens that several roads were not being cleaned properly, following which our teams inspected these roads and accordingly the notices were served," a senior PCMC official said.

The official further said roads were found not properly cleaned at eight places in the last month. "These contractors were also served notices for a similar issue earlier this year," he said. The municipal corporation, in February this year, inaugurated the ambitious mechanical sweeping project to reduce pollution.

The contract to clean the city roads using the advanced cleaning machines was given to the four different contractors. The civic body has been facing criticism over the project since it was announced. First, the import of machines was delayed, and then there was a delay in the registration of the foreign-manufactured vehicles with the RTO office.

The PCMC, to make matters worse, delayed the start of the project to inaugurate it at the hands of deputy CM Ajit Pawar. It may be notedthat PCMC is spending Rs329 crore for a period of seven years for the project under which the highways, BRTS, and other roads measuring 18metres wide and above are cleaned. The projectis part of the National Clean Air Programme.
