B orn in Edinburgh, the fashion designer Patrick Grant is a judge on The Great British Sewing Bee . He runs Community Clothing and has just published the book Less . What item of clothing have you owned the longest? I’ve a suit of my dad’s that I’ve been wearing since I was about 14, so getting on for 40 years.
He must have inherited it or bought it second-hand because it was made by a firm of tailors called Thomsons of Edinburgh in 1934, meaning it’s now 90 years old. It’s still in amazing condition. It doesn’t really feel like I own it; I’m more just a custodian for now.
What’s the best meal you’ve had in Scotland? Whenever I’m in Fife, which is not often enough, we make a pilgrimage to the Kinneuchar Inn in Leven for lunch. The food is heavenly and robust and feels very connected to the East Neuk landscape, a glorious corner of Scotland that is much overlooked. But more than just the food, the atmosphere and the welcome James and Alethea have created, and the amazing community they’ve built around them, are very special.
