The Bhutanese runner is the only female athlete to feature in her country's delegation at the 2024 games and served as the country's flag bearer in the opening ceremony. Amid scorching heat in Paris, Lhamo was reduced to walking on several occasions as she fell well behind the pack.



The Netherlands' Sifan Hassan completed the course in 2:22.55 to secure gold and set a new Olympic record in the process. More than 55 minutes behind her nearest competitor, Lhamo persisted through the streets of the French capital, drawing rapturous applause from trailing supporters as she neared the finish line.

Television cameras captured the moment the 26-year-old neared the finish, as baying fans willed her every step towards the line. Those camped along the roadside drummed against the railings and cheered wildly as she approached the final stretch, before eventually becoming the 80th and final athlete to cross the line with a time of 3:52:59. The climatic moment of Lhamo's race instantly went viral on social media, with fans praising her determination and perseverance.

She was the last of participants but she decided to complete the marathon. And you can see the crowd cheering her.' Supporters took to social media to commend Lhamo for demonstrating the Olympic spirit in her courageous effort Clara Evans was the highest-placed member of Team GB on Sunday, securing a 46-place finish after only being drafted into the event last weekend following an injury to Charlotte Purdue.
