ELKO — Despite Elko County containing four of the 1A East volleyball programs, just two will compete in the regional tournament — taking place Saturday, at Centennial Gymnasium — but one is guaranteed a trip to state. At 11:30 a.m.

Saturday, No. 2 Owyhee (8-4 in league) will clash with No. 3 Carlin (7-5 in league) in the regional semifinal — the winner punching its ticket to the 1A state tourney and the regional title match.



During the regular season, the Lady Braves and the Lady Railroaders split the meetings — the road team winning each time. On Sept. 10, Carlin claimed the first matchup in four frames by scores of 25-21, 27-25, 22-25 and 25-14, in Owyhee.

The Lady Braves returned the favor in resounding fashion on Sept. 20, in Carlin, sweeping the Lady Railroaders by tallies of 25-12, 25-14 and 25-21. Carlin clinched the No.

3 seed and a first-round bye — ultimately avoiding a potential semifinal matchup against No. 1 Eureka (12-0 in league) — due to a tiebreaker process over No. 5 McDermitt, which also finished 7-5 in the 1A East.

The first tiebreaker — head-to-head competition between tied teams — provided no change as the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady Railroaders in straight sets on Sept. 19, in McDermitt, but were defeated in three frames by the Lady Railroaders on Oct. 24, in Carlin.

The second tiebreaker — awarding one point to each tied team for every victory by Carlin’s or McDermitt’s defeated opponents in league play — provided another .
