Outlander ’s virginity-losing scene is even better a decade after the first-ever episode was released. Today marks the 10th anniversary of the first-ever episode of Outlander season one, when fans were first introduced to Claire Beauchamp (played by Catriona Balfe ) and Jamie Fraser (played by Sam Heughan ). Although it may have been a decade since the pilot episode was released, those early seasons are still remembered fondly by fans who are just as obsessed with the series today as they were ten years ago.
As one of those obsessed fans, I can safely say that the first-ever sex scene between Claire and Jamie is still the blueprint for intimacy scenes. The chemistry between the actors is phenomenal but there’s something more beneath the surface that has meant this endearing scene has set the standard for intimacy on TV. The episode is gentle, innocent, and above all, hot, basically everything that losing your virginity should be! Just to add a little context, in season one episode seven, Claire is forced to marry Jamie to protect her from the English.
There’s a whole complicated backstory but the essence of the situation is: this is a marriage of convenience. That said, there had been some major flirting between the pair and a bit of emotional conflict for our poor Claire who was of course still married to Frank -who she accidentally ditched in the 1940s in favour of mud, rain, and sexy highlanders in the eighteenth century. Before she ties the knot with the red-headed hunk, Claire has a very honest conversation with Jamie in which she tells him she has been married and she isn’t a virgin.
She asks him if that bothers him, to which he replies: ‘No, so long as it doesn’t bother you that I am [a virgin].’ Throughout the whole episode, we then see the pair spend time together in their room a the inn and the lead-up as they consummate their marriage – a few times. The losing virginity scene sees the pair chat, warm up to one another, have a few drinks and only then get a bit heated with the duo undressing each other into their undergarments.
‘I said I was a virgin, not a monk. If I need guidance I’ll ask,’ says Jamie full of confidence after helping Claire out of her corset. The poor lad then tries to mount her from behind ‘like the horses’ as he doesn’t realise that actually humans and horses don’t have to have relations in the same position – yikes.
The couple has a realistic first time – quick, awkward, and unsatisfying for Claire. But things warm up as they chat and actually get to know each other and share a meal. The pair then get properly naked with each other for the first time and things go very well with Claire leading the way.
By the end of the episode, the couple is all eye contact as they make love while wrapped in a kilt rounding off their wedding night with yet another sweet scene, this time as equal partners. The episode is essentially dedicated to Jamie losing his virginity with the episode titled: The Wedding, but mostly focusing on the wedding night. This means that there’s time for them to actually have a realistic first time that still ends in a lusty romantic romp that’s satisfying for viewers.
My Lady Jane created a standout virginity-losing scene this year that was applauded by fans. But while this scene was fantastic, it just didn’t have the realism or the emotion packed in like Outlander. Granted, My Lady Jane didn’t dedicate most of an episode to depict one lusty night, which could have been another factor in Outlander’s corner.
But, My Lady Jane, and Briddgerton also both fell into the usual period drama set-up where a man teaches a woman how to have sex. Typically in a period romance, the woman is the innocent virgin and her love interest has either worked his way around a brothel ( looking at you Colin Bridgerton) or has had dalliances in the past. This means that the woman is always on the back foot and there’s a teacher-and-student dynamic that emerges – with the man in the lead of course.
In Outlander, the couple is both nervous and a bit scared for different reasons, but it starts out with Claire in the driving seat, teaching Jamie in a gentle and sexy – but non-patronising way. The episode may have been released 10 years ago but the intimacy in the series is perhaps even more groundbreaking today given the fact that there is nothing in mainstream media that can compare and TV scenes still typically fall into the male leading the woman dynamic. First-time scenes usually highlight just one emotion: humour, romance, awkwardness, or lust but Outlander nails all of these emotions – and more.

While I’m gutted that the series is set to end after season eight which is set to be released in November 2024, Outlander is most certainly leaving behind a legacy.
