Five years into the 2020s and a new poll of over 100 critics has been conducted over at and has asked what are the best films of the decade so far. It has been a several year span dominated by a massive pandemic, industry strikes, and an overall shift to streaming as much more prominent than years earler. As a result movie productions saw multiple delays, cancellations and compromises in order to reach screens – and even then there was no guarantee of the size of the screen they would show on.
Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” came out on top, racking up 22 votes and coming in just ahead of Todd Field’s “TÁR” at 20 and The Daniels’ “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at 19. Tying for fourth were Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s “Drive My Car” and Jonathan Glazer’s “The Zone of Interest” both with 14 votes each. Coming in behind them were “Anatomy of A Fall” at 11; “The Power of the Dog,” “Poor Things” and “Past Lives” at 10 each, and “Licorice Pizza,” “Promising Young Woman” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” at 9 each.
“Top Gun: Maverick,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “All Of Us Strangers,” “RRR” were among the others voted. for the full list. In terms of 2024 titles, “Anora” came out on top with 8 votes followed by “Dune: Part II” with 5, and then a multiple way tie with 4 votes each for “The Substance,” “I Saw the TV Glow,” “The Beast” and “Close Your Eyes”.
