Food storage tips can be a game-changer not just for bananas and potatoes , but also for keeping your onions fresh longer. Onions, a staple veg in UK kitchens, are commonly stowed away in the fridge with other produce, but it turns out that's not where they thrive. If you find your onions sprouting, softening, or moulding, chances are they're not being stored correctly.

YouTube's Jerry James Stone has revealed his ultimate advice for keeping onions in top condition “without them rotting or going mushy”, sharing his insights in one of his videos . He advised: “I’m going to talk to you about how you properly store onions - if you do it correctly, you can actually store them for up to six months. “Onions hate being in the fridge, that’s the first thing - never put them in the fridge.



If you do, they actually rot and go mushy.” Jerry emphasised that cold and moist fridge conditions are a big no-no for whole onions as they need quite the opposite setting. Given their propensity to suck in moisture, putting them in a chiller could make onions squishy and prone to spoiling more rapidly although this doesn’t hold for peeled or pre-cut onions.

“The other thing about onions, is they prefer to be in a dry place, that’s cool, and has good ventilation,” Jerry continued. “Avoid storing them in a cramped drawer; instead aim for a pantry where there's plenty of air movement.
