The rule will be applied to all airports and airlines in the European Union from next month. For the past two decades, air travellers have been well aware of the restrictions on carrying liquids over 100mls in their hand luggage .

All liquids must fit into a small bag when passing through airport security. This rule was introduced back in 2006 following the discovery of a terrorist plot to detonate liquid explosives disguised as soft drinks on several transatlantic flights, reports Dublin Live . However, with advancements in technology for scanning liquids, passengers travelling through certain airports may have noticed new machines that scan liquids more effectively.

This means there's no need to remove them from your bag or, in some cases, adhere to the volume of liquids rules. Back in April, Aberdeen International Airport became one of a selection of UK airports that scrapped these hand liquid rules entirely. However, a U-turn has since been announced, with no confirmation on when this rule will be axed again.

Starting from September 1, travel guidelines will revert to the universal standard of restricting liquids in carry-ons to 100ml across EU airports. Although different travel hubs have been varying in strictness due to differing scanner technologies, after this date, all passengers will need to adhere strictly to the 100ml rule. For many travellers, this won't signify a change as numerous airports have continued to enforce the 100ml limit.

However, those few that permitted larger amounts due to advanced scanning tech are adjusting their guidelines back to the 100ml regulation after the specified date. Liquids exceeding 100 ml will still be allowed in checked luggage with no prescribed volume limit, but they should be well-packed to prevent any spillage or damage during transit. To ensure smooth passage through security and avoid inconvenience while travelling, it's important for passengers to comply with the reinstated liquid limits.

A spokesperson from the European Commission assured Devon Live: "the Commission has not changed its opinion on the quality of this new generation of scanners and their performance has not been called into question." EU rules currently prohibit any containers over 100ml passing through the passenger security screening, and these must be relinquished. Looking ahead: "From September 1, 2024, changes to EU regulation will see the re-introduction of temporary liquid restrictions at airports in the EU," Ireland West Airport has announced.

Adhering to upcoming new rules by the European Commission for EU airports, from September 1, airport security will no longer allow passengers to carry liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) in containers larger than 100ml within their hand luggage. They must ensure all such LAGs are held in 100ml-max containers, kept inside transparent resealable bags, separate from their cabin baggage during security checks. Under the impending directives, there will be no cap on the total number of plastic bags each traveller can utilise.

Exceptions remain in place for essential items over 100ml such as baby products, special dietary needs and medications, which also must be placed in a clear transparent bag, separate to the liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs).

However, these new guidelines do not affect electronics items, such as laptops and phones which can remain in your cabin baggage when going through security at Ireland West Airport. As airports across the UK and Europe, in some instances, may operate different security scanner systems, passengers are advised to check the liquid restrictions locally at each airport as part of your trip. Passengers due to travel from September 1, 2024, onwards are reminded to plan accordingly and ensure that any liquids, aerosols, and gels (LAGs) carried in hand luggage do not exceed the 100ml limit per container and are placed in a clear transparent bag and placed in the tray at security separate to your cabin bag.
