More info When you're on holiday with your family or friends, the last thing you want is to feel unsafe or nervous in your accommodation - especially if you're staying somewhere completely new.

Each year, millions of people use the online platform Airbnb to book their stays, as it often offers an affordable and flexible way to experience a new destination. The site has started imposing a ban on security cameras globally, following numerous reports of 'hidden' cameras inside properties. However, it's crucial to ensure you feel safe and secure on holiday - which is why security expert Shahzad Ali, CEO of Get Licensed , has issued a word of advice.

According to the pro, there is always one thing you should pack when heading off to an Airbnb, just in case your chosen property doesn't have one - and it could end up saving your life. He said: "Most properties listed on Airbnb should be fully equipped with alarms, but just to be on the safe side and for your reassurance, it’s worth bringing your own alarms which can be placed on windows and doors. "As well as security alarms, carbon monoxide detectors are also worth purchasing and taking with you, as the property may not be installed with them and for a small cost, it’s worth protecting your health.

"Regardless of whether you bring your own alarms or not, always put the latch on the door, you don’t know who else has the keys to the accommodation." Shahzad has also recommended that you take care when booking an Airbnb in order to steer clear of any potential scammers. Unfortunately, the popularity of Airbnb has meant that there is an increased risk of people falling victim to fraudsters.

So, before booking your accommodation, make sure you only do it through the Airbnb website and be sure to check the reviews and ratings of the hosts you are interested in. Getting first-hand reviews from fellow travellers will ensure you know what you’re getting when you book through the website. And if you have been talking to a host who you believe is reputable and trustworthy, you may be more inclined to agree to pay for the accommodation outside of the Airbnb website, but it’s important to avoid this at all costs.

Scammers won’t want you to pay through Airbnb as they’re more likely to be caught, so never pay for your accommodation through other methods, no matter how much you trust the host.
