Laverne Cox may now be a pro vintage collector – but in order to get her hands on the very first piece she ever invested in, she had to skip a month’s rent. “One of my designer purchases was..
. a red Oblique purse by Dior,” the actor reveals in The Closet Digest , British Vogue ’s new podcast sponsored by Vinted, which sees our favourite fashion obsessives talking about the most precious, meaningful and hard-working items in their wardrobes. “I was still waiting tables at the time.
And I remember I didn’t pay my rent so I could go see Beyoncé, and I had just splurged on this Dior vintage bag.” Fast forward to today, and Cox has an extensive archive – so extensive, in fact, that she recently rented the apartment across the hallway from her, turning it into a “walk-in closet slash museum”. The impressive collection includes over 500 Thierry Mugler pieces , such as the purple gown from the designer’s spring/summer 1989 “Les Atlantes” collection, which she wore on the Emmys red carpet back in January.
The only challenge? “You have to slither in it because there’s no stretch,” Cox shares. “I didn’t attempt to sit down after the red carpet; I changed into something that was more wearable. This is not for sitting!” During the episode, Cox also references a rare piece in her collection that she’s yet to wear on the red carpet: a Comme des Garçons jacket and matching voluminous skirt, covered in flowers and fruit, from the brand’s spring.
