Last weekend saw two of the best shows in Lincoln in 2024 — Dwight Yoakam and The Mavericks at Pinewood Bowl last Friday and John Fogerty at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Sunday. Here, in chronological order, are abridged reviews of those shows.

“Rehearsal’s over now,” he said, about an hour into last Friday’s show, referring to the unseasonably cool night — it was about 60 degrees by that time. “You’ve got to warm up. I don’t know how Oklahoma ever beat you up here.
” Then, came the familiar guitar lick of “Honky Tonk Man,” a song that those in the Pioneers Park amphitheater were waiting to hear, greeting it with a roar and singing along on the chorus. “I know you guys are warmed up,” Yoakam said after, then he launched into a rambling shaggy-dog story about alien abduction and college football from a conversation he had with Billy Bob Thornton last week. Then Yoakam and his sequined-suited band kicked into “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere,” barreling to the finish with “It Only Hurts When I Cry,” “Little Ways,” that found the crowd singing the final chorus, “Guitars and Cadillacs” and “.
