Aussie swimmer Bronte, 30, got engaged just after her stint at the 2024 Paris Olympics , with her boyfriend Benfield Lainchbury proposing in Venice. Her sister Cate, 32, has now revealed some more details about the proposal but admitted one action of Benfield's left her 'mad' on her sibling's behalf.

The freestyle world record holder revealed that Benfield, 35, didn't get down on one knee when he popped the all-important question to Bronte. 'He didn't get down on one knee, which I was a little bit mad about, but I'm glad he popped the question,' she told Ben Fordham on his 2GB morning radio show. 'It's been eight years, so they really rushed into it,' she jokingly added.



She went on to concede that the proposal was still 'beautiful' and credited Benfield for proposing to Bronte in a very romantic setting - during a canal ride in Venice. When asked if wedding bells are on the horizon for her, Cate insisted she and her partner Adam Kerr have no plans to get engaged any time soon. 'No definitely not, my partner Adam is like ''the pressure is off'' because he can't steal Bronte and Benfield's thunder for a little bit,' she shared. Cate also revealed she hasn't yet seen Bronte since the engagement because her sister has been enjoying a jet-setting trip around Europe after the Paris Olympics. Bronte and her new fiance Benfield, who live in north Bondi, are set to return to Australia in a matter of days after their romantic holiday.

Bronte quietly announced her and Benfield's engagement on Instagram last week, days after she brought home an Olympic gold in the women's 4 x 100m relay final. She shared a carousel of pictures of her and Benfield, including one shot of Bronte wearing a sparkling diamond band with an emerald diamond on her ring finger. Another photograph captured the couple's joy just moments after Benfield popped the question on a canal boat ride in Venice.

Bronte and her new fiance have known each other since childhood and Benfield has been by the swimmer's side ever since they began dating in 2016. He played a pivotal part in the swimmer's decision to return to the pool after an 18-month break following the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Her incredible win at the 2024 Paris Olympics has turned Bronte into a four-time Olympic gold medalist.

She hasn't ruled out a tilt at the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028, when she will be 34 years old. 'Will I still want to do it by the time LA comes around – that's the question,' she told News Corp. Bronte and her new fiance have known each other since childhood and Benfield has been by the swimmer's side ever since they began dating in 2016 'That's what I asked myself after Tokyo, do I still really want to do this? The answer being yes meant that I came back to it.

'I might be at a slightly different phase in my life by then, so we will see.' Bronte's sister Cate is also an Olympic gold medalist swimmer but narrowly missed out on a place at the 2024 Paris Olympics, announcing her retirement shortly after. However, she has instead taken on a commentating role with Channel Nine at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, which is currently underway.
