In other Obama book-related news, the paperback edition of his 2020 memoir , the first of a planned two-part autobiography, was released on Aug. 13. A publication date for the second volume has yet to be announced.

Winnipeg author (and book reviewer) has won the top fiction prize in magazine’s 36th annual writing contest. The winners of the 2024 Short Grain contests in fiction and poetry were announced on Aug. 12, with Jones taking the top prize in fiction, second place going to Manitoba-born and Toronto/Montreal’s winning third place.

In the poetry contest, Toronto’s took the top prize, with of Calgary nabbing second place and B.C.’s rounding out the top three.

The winning entries will be published in fall 2024 issue. Fans of Cheyenne and Arapaho American Indian author ’s writing will have to wait quite some time to read the project he’s currently working on. The author of 2018’s , a Pulitzer Prize finalist, and the follow-up , which was published in February, has been chosen as the 11th author to participate in the Future Library project.

The project began in 2014 and sees one author chosen each year create a text which will remain unread and unpublished until 2114. Then, they’ll be released in limited-edition anthologies printed on specially planted trees grown in Norway and held in a room at the Deichman Library in Oslo. The project is a work of public art conceived by Scottish artist Katie Patterson.

Winnipeg author (and book reviewer) is taking his latest collection of stories on the road — to Onanole, specifically. Birnie will read a pair of stories from his collection , published in late 2023 by Malarkey Books, as well as a new piece of writing, today (Aug. 17) at 4 p.

m. at Poor Michael’s Emporium, a bookstore/café located at the corner of Highway 10 and Albin Avenue in Onanole, which is around 100 kilometres north of Brandon. Victoria science writer lands at McNally Robinson Booksellers’ Grant Park location on Friday, Aug.

23 at 7 p.m., where he’ll launch his debut .

Published in April by Linda Leith Publishing, asks big questions and provides some answers about the wonders and mysteries of the universe. The book is geared towards teens, an audience Hellner-Mestelman knows well — the 17-year-old author wrote (and illustrated) at the ripe old age of 15. The launch will also be streamed on McNally Robinson’s YouTube page.

Opinionated young readers, take note — the Free Press Summer Reading Challenge is wrapping up soon, and we want your opinions on this year’s selected titles. A kid-focused offshoot of the Free Press Book Club, the Summer Reading Challenge for Kids served up reading lists in June for three age groups (7 to 9, 10 to 12 and 13 to 15) curated by McNally Robinson Booksellers. Each reading list features four books, which kids were encouraged to read and review (including a rating out of five stars) for the .
