Tuesday, August 20, 2024 San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK) has successfully concluded the renovation of its Terminal 2 ceiling, a project that included the recycling of 48,000 pounds of waste material. This eco-conscious upgrade not only elevates the aesthetic and functional aspects of Terminal 2 but also aligns with sustainability goals. The installation of new ceiling tiles, made from recycled materials, reflects the airport’s commitment to environmental stewardship while improving the overall travel experience for passengers.

“The recent replacement of our ceiling in Terminal 2 has made a significant improvement for passenger experience here at OAK in terms of both aesthetics and function,” says Craig Simon, Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “Our team was committed to ensuring that this project was completed in an environmentally sustainable way. We accomplished this with the selection of our new ceilings composed of recycled materials and with the recycling of our previous ceiling treatment.

” The recent overhaul of ceiling tiles at Terminal 2, part of the Terminal 2 Ceiling Tile Replacement Project, has significantly upgraded the space. Their durability and ease of maintenance promise enduring quality and visual appeal.

This enhancement has positively impacted the terminal’s aesthetics, air quality, and functionality, aligning with OAK’s sustainability objectives. Turner Construction Company led the initiative, working in partnership with Armstrong World Industries to ensure the old ceiling tiles were recycled, reflecting a commitment to environmental responsibility. “Way to go, team! We successfully recycled over 68,301 square feet of ceiling tile, saving nearly 50,000 pounds of landfill.

I truly appreciate the Port of Oakland’s commitment to building a greener Bay Area and taking action to tell this inspirational story,” said Emi LaFountain , West Coast Sustainability Integrations Manager at Turner Construction Company. The ceiling tiles chosen for installation boasted an impressive 76% recycled content, composed of 75% pre-consumer and 1% post-consumer materials.
