STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Stapleton resident Lorie Honor didn’t waste any time after the 2024 election results were in.

While she was elated New York’s Proposition 1 passed -- which will enshrine abortion rights and equality for all people in the Empire State’s constitution -- her goal is to work on a national level to have the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) officially added to the U.S. Constitution.

“We’ve done this 27 times in our Constitution’s history, including Civil Rights and the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote,” said Honor, who is co-founder of Staten Island Women Who March, and chief of staff for Vote Equality , a national organization whose mission is to bring awareness to the fact that gender equality is not in the U.S. Constitution.

“Revisions of our Constitution were meant to be difficult and rigorous. You can’t just decide you want to change the Constitution. This is why many states have to sign on.

” Following the passage of Proposition 1 in New York, Honor headed to Washington, D.C., to work with Vote Equality and many other groups to bring awareness to the ERA.

“The problem with the ERA is people either think it’s dead or done,” said Honor. “When people find out it’s not in the Constitution, they say, ‘What do you mean?’ Some people think it’s too old, or no one wanted it. There’s a lot of like misinformation .

.. But 90% of Americans agree with the Equal Rights Amendment.
