When New York Fashion Week comes to town each year, fashion fans, influencers , celebrities , and designers travel from far and wide to the Big Apple to embrace all of the glamor that the week has to offer. It is not often that when you think NYFW, you think of paws hitting the runway in place of stilettos. Designer Anthony Rubio breaks those boundaries as he has changed the world of pet fashion entirely, creating designer fashion for furry friends while also raising money for pet charities.
This is his 20th season at NYFW. The real action, however, was backstage. Beyond the models and makeup artists , I caught a glimpse of the canine stars including dogs of "all shapes and sizes," as Anthony put it. Many of them rescues, dressed in couture ballgowns .
The dogs , surprisingly confident, seemed to bask in the spotlight. Rubio’s creations were stunning and each piece meticulously crafted with luxurious fabrics like silk, satin, tulle bursting in bold colors. Also, Rubio’s Canine Couture is meticulously handcrafted utilizing the finest materials to produce designer looks for four-legged friends , as he "takes into full consideration comfort and safety above all else." Yet, beyond the fashion, Rubio’s heart was clearly in his work. His dedication to animal rescue and philanthropy is well-known, raising over $4 million for charities to date, and this show was a testament to that.
Many of the dogs walking the runway were rescues, now finding themselves the stars of New York ’s biggest fashion event. In the mix was Rubio's own dog, Bogie sporting a pink feathered hat. As Anthony put it: "In my world, the humans are the accessories.
