Login Sister Act is a rare musical that’s based on an earlier movie, rather than the other way around. It’s an occasionally awkward fit, but the source material - the 1992 surprise hit starring Whoopi Goldberg as lounge singer turned nun-in-disguise Deloris - is strong enough to ensure some heavenly moments.

The musical version of Sister Act is as much a star vehicle as the movie, and its notable that producer John Frost has overseen the casting of Casey Donovan as Deloris. Sister Act’s plot is as thin as a page from a hymn book but it is propelled by upbeat music and strong direction. And deservedly so. Donovan is a likeable and versatile performer who on opening night hit all the punchlines, as well as some impressive high notes. As anyone who’s watched one of the last half-dozen ABC TV New Year’s Eve broadcasts would know, Donovan’s natural terrain is soul and disco, so the shifting of the action from ’90s Nevada in the movie to 1977 Philadelphia in the musical suited her well.
