Manager Billy Bingham hugs goalscorer Gerry Armstrong after Northern Ireland's defeat of Spain Northern Ireland hero Gerry Armstrong and his wife have appealed for information after their pet cat was attacked and left badly injured. Deborah Armstrong believes Milo was the victim of animal cruelty. She said their cat returned earlier this week with “terrible” injuries to its jaw, and has undergone two operations.

Mrs Armstrong said the couple have been left “heartbroken and horrified”. She posted an appeal on social media to find those responsible. In her appeal, she writes: “Our sweet boy Milo came home on Tuesday in a terrible condition.

“Initially, we thought he had been hit by a car, but after rushing him to the vet and undergoing two operations, we received devastating news. “Our vet, who has over 30 years of experience, informed us that Milo’s injuries—upper and lower broken jaws—were caused by a deliberate act of violence. “He had been struck with such force that it couldn’t have been an accident.

“We live in a beautiful village, and it’s hard to imagine that someone so cruel could do this to our gentle and timid Milo. “We are heartbroken and horrified. To think that someone in our community could do such a thing is beyond comprehension.

“We are offering a reward to anyone who can help us identify the person responsible. “This happened during the daytime on Tuesday in the Glenavy area. We have rescued five cats, and now we are terrified to let them out.

“Please, if you have any information or if you saw anything suspicious, come forward. “It could be your fur baby next, and we need to make sure this doesn’t happen again.” Gerry Armstrong won 56 caps and scored 12 goals for Northern Ireland.

He also played in the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, scoring the famous goal which beat Spain in their own back yard in 1982. Manager Billy Bingham hugs goalscorer Gerry Armstrong after Northern Ireland's defeat of Spain.
