Shane Coleman shared how he was priced out of a holiday in Ireland. The Newstalk host and his wife were trying to book a staycation in the west of the country with their two children. However, after trying very hard to find affordable accommodation that suited their family, they ended up having to give up their plans after being quoted thousands for a three night stay.

Speaking on Newstalk Breakfast, he said: “There are few people that would argue that Ireland is a cheap place to holiday, but you may have heard our conversation a little earlier on the show about my efforts to try and get somewhere to stay for myself, two of the kids and my wife next week and the kind of prices we were quoted.

“The best one being €3,095 for a four bedroom house for three nights down the west of Ireland .” Shane shared that he was also quoted €2,000 for three nights at a Clare hotel for himself, his wife and two children and €1,220 for two nights in a B&B. Enjoying a staycation in Ireland isn’t an unusual experience for him, as his family made the most of the country’s stunning holiday spots during the pandemic.

However, he’s noticed a massive price jump in the past three years. “I did staycation in Ireland in 2020 and 2021, there was still value to be had,” he said. “We hired a house for two weeks, a beautiful house, in 2021.

I think it was €950 for the week, which was perfectly fine. “We were looking to try and get the same house now and it was 60-70% higher than that. “Even allowing for increased energy costs and so on, it does seem like there’s a squeeze going on.

” He asked travel writer Megan Virgo on his show: “Where is there value?”.
